Where You'll Be
What You will do
- Manage engineers and developers to help them increase their impact over time. This includes providing mentorship and guidance, developing their skillsets, providing continuous feedback to help them grow, setting the right expectations and holding them accountable.
- Drive engineering processes and initiatives across the team to help maintain high standards, increase our development velocity, and adapt as our team and needs change over time.
- Foster a positive engineering culture of collaboration, continuous feedback and improvement, and high responsibility and accountability.
- Collaborate with leads across the company (in product, design, data, and operations) to ensure we’re executing well on projects and that we have the right engineering resources staffed to them.
- Keep the level of execution of our engineering team high, with best practices around testing, code quality, security, and automation to help reduce errors and maintenance costs.
- Partner with our founder in guiding our technical direction and effectively translating that into how we execute across the engineering team.
- Manage our recruiting and hiring processes for engineering as we grow the team as needed.
- Communicate with customers and sales leads to gather product requirements and translate them into executable tasks for the engineering team.
- Contribute to the product by designing solutions, writing, testing, and debugging code.
What we are looking for
- A minimum of 6 years of experience successfully managing and mentoring software engineers and web developers.
- Experience in leading teams that deliver high quality products to users, which are scalable, reliable, secure, and heavily adaptable as needs change.
- Strong communicator and collaborator who can partner across different functions and understand their needs while representing engineering’s needs.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and flexible to change as the company grows and priorities shift over time.
- Knowledge of the technical stack that we use, including FreeBSD, PHP, C, Zig, JavaScript, and TCP/IP network services.
- Experience working in the Internet email ecosystem or tech-driven startups isn’t required but a plus.
Additional Information
Compensation for this role depends on location and experience. Average yearly salary for this position is between $55,000 and $70,000. This is a full time remote only position with no travel requirements.
What to Expect
SecureMessage is changing the way people work. Your job is not your life, our employees work Monday – Thursday for 6 hours a day (9:30 AM to 3:30 PM). We offer several paid federal, Christian, and Catholic holidays, as well as Columbus Day, Halloween, Election Day, and your Birthday. Everyone has access to a flexible unlimited “take as you need” vacation policy. Additionally, our business shuts down at the end of each year in observance of Yule, usually the last 12 days of the month of December. Finally, we do not use video conferencing, our meetings are audio only. Daily interaction is primarily text based communication with real-time chat and (of course) Email!
SecureMessage is changing the way software is built. Here there are no Agile or Scrum rituals to waste your time that result in poor quality software with frequent superfluous releases and minimal impact. We schedule our new releases during the fall and publish refinement during the spring. Giving both our customers and developers ample time to plan their strategy and set expectations.
